How to read the table
- Want simpler logging? MyFitnessPal and Lose It! both have free tiers. MyFitnessPal's AI Nutrition Coach is for Premium members on iOS and Android.
- Want people and structure? WeightWatchers' Workshops add live coaching.
- On a GLP-1? Noom's GLP-1 Companion is free for anyone taking one. MyFitnessPal logs doses and side effects next to food; check which tier includes it. Our GLP-1 app guide goes deeper.
- Weight still stuck after lessons? A holistic companion looks across food, sleep, and how you feel. Our sister site explains what an AI health companion is and compares the best apps for stubborn weight.
- Suspect a medical cause? No app replaces a clinician who can check medicines and health conditions.
Do apps like Noom work?
Modestly, on average. A 2026 meta-analysis of 42 randomized trials found mobile health lifestyle programs led to about 1.8 kg (about 4 pounds) more weight loss than comparison groups (Tang et al.). A 2024 Cochrane review found little to no difference in body weight with apps alone compared with minimal help. The app you'll keep using matters more than the feature list.
Where Olive fits
Olive is an AI health companion that checks in daily and helps you link what you eat to how you feel. It doesn't diagnose or treat anything. Members who want clinical help can add the Olive Protocol, which includes a licensed-clinician consult; treatment only if the clinician decides it fits. See also Noom vs holistic weight loss apps.
Who this guide is for (and who it isn't for)
Good fit:
- You've tried Noom, or considered it, and want a side-by-side view.
- You know what you're missing, like simpler logging, a group, or GLP-1 support.
Not the right fit:
- You need medical care for a condition or new symptoms. See a doctor first.
- You have a history of an eating disorder. Get specialist support before using a tracking app.
Find an approach that fits
Olive's companion checks in with you every day to spot patterns and build habits that hold, with a path to a licensed clinician if your weight stays stubborn. It's free to try.
Medical disclaimer

Medical disclaimer: This page is general education, not medical advice. GLP-1 medicines are prescription-only. Don't start, stop, or change a medicine without your clinician. Individual results vary.
Reader questions
- What apps are like Noom?
- The closest apps like Noom are MyFitnessPal and Lose It! for food tracking, WeightWatchers for its Points Program and Workshops, and holistic companions like Olive for daily check-ins and pattern-finding. Noom also offers a free GLP-1 Companion for people taking a GLP-1. Which fits best depends on what you're missing, which the comparison table on this page lays out.
- Is there a free app like Noom?
- Several apps have free options. MyFitnessPal has a free tier and Lose It! offers free sign-up, with paid features on both. Noom's GLP-1 Companion is free for anyone taking a GLP-1 medication, regardless of provider, according to Noom's June 2026 announcement. Olive is free to try. Our dated price comparison lists current costs, which change often.
- What's the difference between Noom and a calorie counter?
- Noom is built around psychology-based lessons and "human coaching plus AI support," with meal logging as one part. Calorie counters like MyFitnessPal and Lose It! focus on fast, detailed food logging. MyFitnessPal also offers an AI Nutrition Coach for Premium members on iOS and Android. If you want to work on habits, Noom-style coaching may fit; if you mainly want numbers, a tracker may be simpler.
- What app like Noom is best if I'm on a GLP-1?
- Look for help with protein, fluids, nausea days, and strength training, not just calories. Noom's GLP-1 Companion is free for anyone taking a GLP-1, MyFitnessPal logs doses and side effects next to food (check which tier includes it), and WeightWatchers offers clinician paths, as does Olive. Your prescriber should still manage the medicine, including any dose changes.
- Do weight loss apps like Noom actually work?
- They help modestly on average. A 2026 meta-analysis of 42 trials found about 1.8 kg more weight loss with mobile health programs than comparison groups, while a 2024 Cochrane review found little to no difference in weight with apps alone. Consistency matters more than features. If your weight won't move despite steady habits, talk with a clinician about other causes.
