Remote Health Coach Jobs: Where They Are and How to Qualify
Contents
Short answer: Yes, health coaching can be done remotely. The National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) counts coaching sessions held by phone or live video toward board certification, CDC allows the National Diabetes Prevention Program to be delivered online, and the Medicare coaching codes CMS has proposed paying for are already on Medicare's telehealth list. [S02] [S03] [S06] Employers set their own requirements, and NBHWC board certification is one recognized credential. [S01] Before you sign on, check whether you'd be an employee or a contractor, and watch for job scams. [S07] [S08]
Where remote health coaching work comes from
There's no official federal count of remote health coach jobs. The settings below are where public sources show coaching can be done remotely.
Diabetes prevention programs
The National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) lifestyle change program uses a CDC-approved curriculum and a trained Lifestyle Coach. CDC sets standards for organizations that offer it in person or online. [S03] A recognized program runs for at least a year, with at least 16 sessions in the first six months and at least six in the last six. [S03]
CDC lists three staff roles for these programs [S04]:
- Lifestyle Coach: leads sessions and supports and encourages participants.
- Program coordinator: oversees daily operations, supports coaches and makes sure the program meets quality outcomes.
- Data preparer: collects and submits data to CDC.
In large programs, each role is usually a different person. In small programs, one person may fill all three. [S04] Programs must collect participants' weight and physical activity minutes at each session and report the data every six months. [S03]
Medical practices (if Medicare's proposal is finalized)
In its proposed 2027 Physician Fee Schedule, CMS would set national payment for three health and well-being coaching codes [S06]:
- 0591T: an individual initial assessment of 60 to 90 minutes
- 0592T: individual follow-up sessions of at least 30 minutes
- 0593T: group coaching of at least 30 minutes
Under the proposal, trained and certified staff could provide these services under a billing practitioner's direct supervision. Coaches employed by qualifying community-based organizations could work under general supervision. The codes are already on the Medicare Telehealth Services List. [S06] CMS proposed no frequency limits as long as the services are reasonable and necessary, and asked for comment on whether to create new HCPCS G-codes for coaching instead. [S06]
What that means for remote work isn't settled. The telehealth listing is relevant to virtual delivery, and the supervision rules would affect who could provide the services. [S06]
Status: As of October 29, 2026, CMS still listed this rule (CMS-1848-P) as a proposed rule. Its comment period date was September 14, 2026. [S05] NBHWC says it expects the final rule to be published between October and November 2026. [S09] Until a final rule is published, it's not settled whether or how this payment will happen.
Your own practice
If you coach clients independently, NBHWC's coaching log accepts both paid and pro bono sessions held by phone or live video. [S02] Our guide to what a health coach does covers the scope of the role.
What remote employers look for
Training and board certification
Requirements differ by employer. To become board certified through NBHWC, you need to [S01]:
- Complete an approved training program. NBHWC lists more than 138 approved programs, from certificates to master's degrees, including programs offered online. [S01]
- Log 50 coaching sessions. [S01]
- Meet the education requirement: an associate degree or higher in any field, or 4,000 hours of work experience. [S01]
- Pass the board exam. [S01]
Upcoming NBHWC exam windows [S01]:
Exam window | Application period |
|---|---|
Nov 30 – Dec 14, 2026 | Sep 28 – Oct 12, 2026 (closed) |
Mar 8 – 23, 2027 | Jan 19 – Feb 2, 2027 |
Jul 19 – Aug 3, 2027 | May 24 – Jun 6, 2027 |
NBHWC says all application periods close at 5:00 PM Eastern. [S01] The fall 2026 application window has closed, so the next chance to apply is January 19 to February 2, 2027. [S01]

Building your coaching log remotely
You can do your 50 sessions from home, but they have to follow NBHWC's rules [S02]:
- Sessions must last at least 20 minutes and be dated after you pass your program's final Practical Skills Assessment.
- At least 75% of each session must be coaching, not education.
- Sessions can be in person, by phone, or over live interactive technology such as Zoom or FaceTime.
- Text-based coaching sessions don't count.
- Clients can't be friends, family or current classmates.
- Group sessions count as one session.
If your employer's rules limit what you can share, NBHWC accepts a letter from your supervisor on company letterhead confirming 50 qualifying sessions. [S02]
Program-specific training
The National DPP requires Lifestyle Coaches trained on a CDC-approved curriculum. CDC lists 11 training entities that have signed agreements with CDC to provide that training. [S04]
Employee or independent contractor?
If a remote coaching role is offered as contract work, it helps to know how the IRS decides worker status. It looks at three kinds of evidence [S07]:
- Behavioral: Does the company control, or have the right to control, what you do and how you do it?
- Financial: Does the company control the business side of the job, such as how you're paid and who provides tools?
- Type of relationship: Are there written contracts, benefits, or an expectation the work will continue?
If your status is still unclear, either you or the business can file Form SS-8 to ask the IRS for a determination. [S07]
Watch for work-from-home job scams
The FBI has warned about fake work-from-home jobs. Scammers pose as legitimate businesses such as staffing or recruiting agencies, contact people with unsolicited calls or messages, and require payments to "unlock" work or earn more. [S08]
The FBI's tips [S08]:
- Be cautious of unsolicited job offers, and avoid clicking links, downloading files or opening attachments in them.
- Never send money to an alleged employer.
- Don't send financial or personal identifying information to people making unsolicited job offers.
- Report suspected fraud to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
Questions to ask before you accept a remote role
Based on the sources above, these questions help you check a remote coaching offer:
- Will I be an employee or a contractor? Ask who controls your schedule and methods, how you're paid, and who provides tools. [S07]
- Do my sessions count toward board certification? Phone and live video sessions can count; text-based coaching can't. [S02]
- What training does the role require? A diabetes prevention program needs coaches trained on a CDC-approved curriculum. [S04]
- Am I being asked to pay anything? The FBI says never send money to an alleged employer. [S08]
How remote coaching compares with related roles
Coaching roles go by different titles; CDC's diabetes prevention program, for example, calls its coaches Lifestyle Coaches. [S04] Our guide to health coach vs. life coach explains how health coaching differs from life coaching. For the full path into the field, see how to become a health coach.
Reader questions
- Can you be a health coach from home?
- Yes. The National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching accepts sessions held by phone or live video such as Zoom or FaceTime toward its coaching log, and CDC allows organizations to deliver the National Diabetes Prevention Program online.
- Do remote health coach jobs require certification?
- Requirements vary by employer. Board certification through the NBHWC is one recognized credential, and CDC's National Diabetes Prevention Program requires Lifestyle Coaches trained on a CDC-approved curriculum. Medicare's proposed coaching payment would also require trained and certified staff.
- Do text-based coaching sessions count toward NBHWC certification?
- No. NBHWC says text-based coaching sessions are not eligible for the coaching log. Sessions must be in person, by phone or by live interactive technology, last at least 20 minutes, and be at least 75% coaching.
- Are remote health coaches employees or contractors?
- It depends on the arrangement. The IRS looks at how much control the company has over the work, the business side of the job and the type of relationship. If it is unclear, the business or the worker can file Form SS-8 for an IRS determination.
- How can I spot a fake remote coaching job?
- The FBI warns that fake work-from-home jobs often come through unsolicited messages and ask you to pay to unlock work. Never send money to an alleged employer, and do not send financial or personal information to people making unsolicited job offers.
