Free Health Coach Certifications Compared

Free health coach courses exist, but the certificate usually costs extra and none leads to the national board exam. California's state wellness coach certification is free to apply for but needs a degree and field hours. Here's how the options compare.

Short answer: You can learn health coaching for free, but a free certification that employers or the national board recognize is rare. Free courses from Alison and Catch Wisdom let you study at no cost, then charge if you want the certificate. [S03] [S05] IIN offers a free sample class, not a credential. [S06] The one free official option is California's Certified Wellness Coach, which is free to apply for but requires a degree and 400 to 2,700 hours of qualifying experience. [S08] None of the free courses leads to the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) exam, and that exam alone costs $500 in fees as listed on November 1, 2026. [S11] [S12]

"Free health coach certification" usually means one of three things: a free course with a paid certificate, a free preview of a paid program, or a state credential that's free to apply for but has steep entry rules. This comparison shows what each option costs, what you get and what it can and can't do for your career. All details are as listed on each organization's website on November 1, 2026.

Alison's free health coaching courses

Alison is a large online learning platform with two relevant courses. "Coaching Health and Wellness" takes an average of 1.5 to 3 hours, and the "Diploma in Wellness, Nutrition and Health Coaching" takes about 4 to 5 hours. Both include video. [S01] [S02]

What's free: Studying and completing any Alison course costs nothing. If you don't buy a certificate or diploma, you can download a free Learner Record, which Alison describes as official confirmation of the courses you've completed and your results. [S03]

What you pay for: A certificate or diploma is optional and paid. [S03] Alison's course pages didn't list the certificate price on November 1, 2026, so confirm the current cost at checkout.

What it's worth: Alison's courses are accredited by CPD UK, so the certificate can count toward continuing professional development hours if your employer or professional body accepts it. [S04] Alison is also candid about limits: its courses focus on basic, skills-based workplace learning, and it says a diploma like its nursing course "cannot be compared to a formal, accredited qualification." [S04] The same logic applies to coaching.

Best for: Testing whether you like the subject, or adding a short CPD item to a résumé you already have.

Catch Wisdom Wellness Coaching

Catch Wisdom offers a free Wellness Coaching course with twelve lessons, from coaching foundations to motivational interviewing and goal setting. [S05] The course page lists 12 hours, with about 6 hours of video, and it's self-paced with no deadline. [S05]

At the end you take a 20-question online exam with a 30-minute limit; scoring at least 70 out of 100 earns the certificate. [S05] The course is free, but the certificate is optional and paid, listed from $55 on November 1, 2026. [S05] Catch Wisdom describes it as a certificate of participation. [S05]

Best for: A slightly deeper free introduction than Alison's shorter course, with an exam at the end.

IIN's free sample class

The Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) offers a free sample of the first module of its Health Coach Training Program. [S06] It's a preview, not a certification.

The full program is paid and runs on a 12-month or six-month accelerated track. Graduates earn the title "IIN Certified Health Coach." [S07] IIN notes that its separate Coaching Intensive Practicum is the course approved by NBHWC, which prepares graduates to apply for the board exam. [S07]

Best for: Trying IIN's teaching style before committing to tuition. Our guide to affordable health coach training can help you budget the full path.

California Certified Wellness Coach

California's Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) runs a state Certified Wellness Coach program. [S09] It's the only official coaching credential in this comparison that's free: the program states that the certificate is free. [S08]

The catch is eligibility. There are two pathways: [S08]

  • Education Pathway: Recent graduates (within six years) with a degree in psychology, social work, human services or addiction studies from an accredited California school. Certified Wellness Coach I needs an associate degree and 400 hours of field experience; Certified Wellness Coach II needs a bachelor's degree and 800 hours. Applications are accepted with 150 or 300 hours completed.
  • Workforce Pathway: People with any associate or bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. school and 1,350 (Wellness Coach I) or 2,700 (Wellness Coach II) hours of direct pre-clinical behavioral health work with children and youth through age 25.

Certified Wellness Coaches recertify every two years, with 20 hours of continuing education that must include at least 3 hours on cultural responsiveness and 3 hours on laws and ethics. [S10] The program has offered scholarships of up to $35,000 a year for students working toward the credential. [S08]

Best for: People in California who want to work with young people in schools, clinics or community organizations. It's a behavioral health workforce role, not a general health coaching credential for private practice.

The real cost of board certification

The national credential for health and wellness coaches is NBC-HWC, from the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching. There's no free route to it. To sit for the board exam, you need to: [S11]

  1. Complete one of more than 138 NBHWC-approved training programs, which range from certificates to master's degrees.
  2. Log 50 qualifying coaching sessions.
  3. Meet the education rule: an associate's degree or higher, or 60 college credits, or 4,000 hours of work experience in any field.

On top of training, NBHWC lists a non-refundable $100 application fee and a $400 exam fee. [S12] NBHWC also mentions the Post-9/11 GI Bill as a funding route for eligible veterans. [S11] You can search approved options in the NBHWC program directory [S13] or read our guide to NBHWC-approved programs.

If you're unsure which credential you need, our explainer on certificates vs board certification breaks down the difference, and our guide to health coach training without a degree covers the education rule.

What any coaching certificate lets you do

A certificate, free or paid, doesn't expand what a coach is allowed to do. NBHWC's scope of practice says that, on their own, health and wellness coaches don't diagnose conditions, prescribe, recommend supplements, give nutrition consultations or create meal plans. [S14] Coaching focuses on helping clients set and reach their own goals.

How to choose

  • Just curious? Start with Alison or Catch Wisdom. You can finish the course for free and decide later whether the certificate is worth paying for.
  • Considering a paid program? Use IIN's sample class, or any program's free preview, to judge the teaching before you enroll.
  • In California and working with young people? Look at the Certified Wellness Coach pathways.
  • Want a recognized professional credential? Budget for an NBHWC-approved program plus $500 in exam fees. Our health coach certification cost guide walks through the totals.

Reader questions

Is there a free health coach certification?
There are free health coaching courses, such as Alison's and Catch Wisdom's, but the certificate at the end usually costs extra. California's Certified Wellness Coach credential is free to apply for, but it requires a degree and qualifying field hours. None of the free courses here leads to the national board exam.
Is Alison's health coaching certificate legitimate?
It's a real CPD-accredited certificate that shows you finished a short course. Alison itself says its courses focus on basic workplace skills and can't be compared to formal accredited qualifications. It doesn't make you eligible for NBHWC board certification.
What is the cheapest way to become a board-certified health coach?
You'll need an NBHWC-approved program, which isn't free, plus $500 in NBHWC fees ($100 application and $400 exam) as listed on November 1, 2026. Compare approved programs on total cost, and check whether GI Bill benefits or employer funding can help.
Is IIN's free sample class a certification?
No. It's a free preview of the first module of IIN's paid Health Coach Training Program. The IIN Certified Health Coach title comes only from completing the full paid program.
Who can get California's free Certified Wellness Coach certification?
People with an associate or bachelor's degree plus qualifying field hours. Recent graduates in psychology, social work, human services or addiction studies need 400 or 800 hours. People already working with children and youth can qualify with any degree and 1,350 or 2,700 hours.
