Functional Medicine Health Coach Certifications

Only some functional medicine coaching programs lead to the national board exam. FMCA and NTA's coaching program are NBHWC-approved; Functional Nutrition Alliance and FDN issue their own credentials. Here's how they compare on cost, length and scope.

Short answer: There's no single official functional medicine health coach certification. Schools issue their own credentials, and only some of their programs lead to the national board exam for coaches (NBC-HWC). Of the four main options, the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy (FMCA; $9,999) and the Nutritional Therapy Association's Professional Health and Wellness Coaching program (NTA PHWC; $5,000) are NBHWC-approved. [S01] [S03] [S06] The Functional Nutrition Alliance ($7,950) and Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN; $11,497 paid in full) issue their own functional credentials but don't appear in NBHWC's approved list. [S04] [S05] [S06] The Institute for Functional Medicine certifies only licensed clinicians. [S10]

"Functional medicine health coach" sounds like one credential, but it covers very different programs. Some teach coaching skills inside a functional medicine framework; others focus on functional nutrition or lab-based protocols. This comparison lays out what each program costs, how long it takes, whether it leads to board certification, and what the credential lets you do. All prices are as listed on each school's website on October 31, 2026, and can change.

Program by program

Functional Medicine Coaching Academy (FMCA)

FMCA is the program most closely tied to functional medicine itself. It says its Health Coach Certification Program is the only one designed and delivered in collaboration with the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM), and students get access to IFM's toolkit, including its food plans, while enrolled. [S01]

  • Format: Online, with weekly Zoom meetings in a cohort of 15 students that stays together through the program. [S01]
  • Length and start date: 12 months, or 6 months on the accelerated track. The next classes start March 1, 2027. [S01]
  • Cost: $9,999, or $7,999 if you enroll during the early decision period ending December 7, 2026. Monthly payment plans and longer-term financing are available. [S01]
  • Approval: NBHWC-approved and approved by the UK & International Health Coaching Association. [S01] It appeared in NBHWC's directory when we checked. [S06]
  • Entry requirement: A high school diploma or equivalent; no college degree is needed to enroll or graduate. [S02]
  • Credential: Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach (FMCHC). [S01]

Best fit: People who want coaching skills and functional medicine content in one program and plan to sit for the board exam.

Nutritional Therapy Association (NTA) PHWC

NTA is best known for its Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP) program, which focuses on nutrient-dense food and root-cause foundations. [S03] Its separate Professional Health and Wellness Coaching (PHWC) program focuses on coaching psychology and sustainable behavior change. [S03]

  • Format: Weekly recorded lectures, forums and required live class calls. [S03]
  • Time: 10 to 15 hours a week. [S03]
  • Cost: $5,000, with discounts, payment plans, scholarships and grants listed. [S03]
  • Approval: The PHWC qualifies graduates for the NBC-HWC exam, [S03] and NTA appeared in NBHWC's directory. [S06]
  • Entry requirement: A high school diploma. [S03]
  • Credential: NTA Certified PHWC. [S03]

The NTP program is a different path: $8,000, about 20 hours a week, and it leads to the National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP) exam rather than the coaching board. [S03]

Best fit: The lowest-cost route to an NBHWC-approved program from a school with a root-cause nutrition background.

Functional Nutrition Alliance: Full Body Systems

Full Body Systems is a 10-month online program aimed at coaches, clinicians and aspiring practitioners. [S04] It's a functional nutrition program rather than an NBHWC coaching program.

  • Cost: $7,950 over 12 monthly payments of $662.50, or $7,450 paid in full. [S04]
  • Credential: Certified Functional Nutrition Counselor (CFNC). [S04]
  • Board options: Graduates can apply for board certification with the American Association of Drugless Practitioners, the American Natural Wellness Coaches Board or the American Association of Natural Wellness Practitioners Board, each requiring a separate application and payment. [S04] The site itself notes that its accrediting organization isn't recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. [S04]
  • Continuing education: 30 Category 1 CEUs with NANP. [S04]
  • NBHWC: Not listed in NBHWC's approved directory. [S06]

Best fit: Existing coaches or clinicians who want deeper functional nutrition training and don't need the NBC-HWC route.

Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN)

FDN is the most lab-focused option. It markets training in functional lab testing, access to order more than 70 labs without a medical license, and building personalized protocols. [S05]

  • Cost: $11,497 paid in full (regularly $12,997), or payment plans of $997 a month for 12 months, $499 for 24 months or $389 for 36 months. [S05]
  • Refund policy: A refund within 30 days if you haven't progressed past Module 1, minus a $250 administration fee. [S05]
  • NBHWC: Not listed in NBHWC's approved directory. [S06]

Best fit: People who specifically want lab-based training and understand the legal limits that come with it (see below).

What about IFM and Kresser Institute?

Two well-known names in functional medicine don't offer a coaching credential:

  • The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) runs its certification through the International Board of Functional Medicine Certification, with FMCP-M for licensed physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants and FMCP for other licensed practitioners. There's no coach track. [S10] Coaches can get IFM-linked training through FMCA's collaboration. [S01]
  • Kresser Institute now lists its Adapt Practitioner Training, Fellowship and Certification for licensed clinicians, plus on-demand specialized courses. Its former health coach training page now shows the clinician program, and we found no coach program listed. [S11]

Getting board-certified after any approved program

If you complete FMCA or NTA's PHWC, the national credential is a separate step through NBHWC: [S07]

  1. Finish an approved program. NBHWC lists more than 138 approved programs. [S07]
  2. Meet the education rule. You need an associate's degree or higher in any field, 60 college credits with an attestation form, or 4,000 hours of work experience in any field. [S07]
  3. Apply and pay. The application fee is $100 (non-refundable) and the exam fee is $400. [S08] Applications can take up to 30 days to process. [S07]

That adds $500 to any program's tuition. Our guides to NBHWC-approved programs, certification vs. board certification and health coach certification cost go deeper. If you don't have a degree, see health coach certification without a degree.

Scope of practice: what the credential doesn't change

A functional medicine label doesn't widen what a coach can legally do. NBHWC's scope of practice says that, on their own, coaches don't diagnose, interpret medical data, prescribe, recommend supplements, provide nutrition consultation or create meal plans. Coaches can support treatment plans set by licensed professionals. [S09]

Labs are where this matters most. FMCA itself tells students that health coaches can't use a medical license to order labs for coaching clients, and it covers how state medical and dietetics laws interact with private coaching certifications. [S12] If a program advertises lab access, as FDN does, [S05] check your state's rules before you build a service around it. Our guide to what a health coach does covers the day-to-day role.

How to choose

  • You want the board exam and functional medicine content: FMCA.
  • You want the board exam at the lowest tuition: NTA's PHWC.
  • You already coach and want functional nutrition depth: Functional Nutrition Alliance.
  • You want lab-based protocols: FDN, with a clear plan for staying within your state's scope rules.
  • You're a licensed clinician: Look at IFM or Kresser Institute instead of a coaching program.

Reader questions

Is there an official functional medicine health coach certification?
No single official one exists. Individual schools issue their own credentials, such as FMCA's FMCHC. The national credential for coaches is NBC-HWC, which you can sit for after an NBHWC-approved program. The Institute for Functional Medicine certifies only licensed clinicians.
How much does functional medicine health coach certification cost?
As listed on school websites on October 31, 2026: FMCA $9,999 ($7,999 with early decision), NTA's coaching program $5,000, Functional Nutrition Alliance's Full Body Systems $7,950 ($7,450 paid in full) and FDN $11,497 paid in full. NBHWC's board exam adds $500 in fees.
Is FMCA NBHWC-approved?
Yes. FMCA lists approval by NBHWC and the UK & International Health Coaching Association, and it appeared in NBHWC's approved program directory on October 31, 2026. Graduates can apply for the NBC-HWC exam if they also meet NBHWC's education or work-experience rule.
Can a functional medicine health coach order labs?
Not under a coaching credential alone. NBHWC's scope says coaches don't diagnose or interpret medical data, and FMCA notes coaches can't use a medical license to order labs. Some programs, like FDN, advertise access to labs; check your state's laws before offering that.
Do I need a degree to become a functional medicine health coach?
Not to enroll. FMCA and NTA's coaching program require a high school diploma. To sit for the NBC-HWC board exam, NBHWC requires an associate's degree or higher, 60 college credits, or 4,000 hours of work experience.
